In fishing terms, a wind on leader is a section of heavier line which provides additional shock absorption and abrasion protection on the end of your mainline and will be used by the deckhand to “take a wrap” when the fish is in position for a tag or gaff shot.

Generally, a wind on leader is connected “loop to loop” to your mainline with a plait or bimini twist. On the other end, a ball bearing snap swivel is crimped on to the wind on leader and then all you have to do is clip your lure on.
